Resume play (continue watching)

Magic Resume lets AtomicPlayer give returning viewers a continue-watching experience. When enabled, the embed includes the resume-play flag so the player can remember progress for that viewer when supported by the browser and player storage.

Enable​

  1. Open the video in Video settings.
  2. Find Magic Resume in the embed/settings controls.
  3. Turn it on.
  4. Click Save editions.
  5. Republish Atomicat pages or copy a fresh external embed.
  6. Test by watching part of the video, closing the page, and returning in the same browser.

When it helps​

  • Long VSLs where visitors commonly return later.
  • Webinar-style videos or multi-session training.
  • Remarketing traffic that comes back after leaving mid-video.
  • Pages where "continue watching" improves the experience more than forcing everyone back to the intro.

When to keep it off​

  • Compliance requires every view to start at 0:00.
  • The opening disclaimer, risk notice, or qualification step must be replayed every time.
  • You are running an A/B test where every visitor must see the same first sequence.
  • The video changes often and old saved positions could place viewers in the wrong section.

How to test resume​

  1. Publish the page or update the external embed.
  2. Open the live URL in a normal browser window.
  3. Watch at least 30 seconds.
  4. Close the tab.
  5. Reopen the same live URL in the same browser profile.
  6. Confirm whether the player resumes near the previous position.

Then test a first-time visit in a private window to make sure new visitors still start where you expect.

Privacy note​

Resume behavior depends on browser-side or player-managed persistence. Storage can be affected by private browsing, third-party restrictions, device changes, browser cleanup, and consent tools. Mention cookies, local storage, or similar technologies in your privacy policy when required.

Troubleshooting​

  • If resume does not work, confirm Magic Resume is enabled, saved, and present in the updated page or external embed.
  • Test in the same browser and device. Resume is not a reliable cross-device sync feature.
  • Disable private browsing and aggressive privacy extensions while testing.
  • If Magic Autoplay is also enabled, test both first visit and return visit because the two features affect different moments.
  • If every session must start from zero, disable Magic Resume and update the embed again.

Typically no—storage is per browser profile. Treat it as a convenience for the same device returning.

Does Magic Resume conflict with Magic Autoplay?

They solve different problems. You can run both, but always preview the first visit vs return visit stories.

Why does resume work in one browser but not another?

Resume depends on local browser or player storage. Private windows, storage cleanup, consent tools, and browser privacy settings can prevent the saved position from being reused.

Do I need to update the embed after enabling it?

Yes. Save editions, then republish Atomicat pages or replace external HTML so the resume-play setting reaches visitors.
